Metoclopramide, an Increasingly Recognized Cause

چکیده
T ardive dyskinesia (TD), a hyperkinetic movement disorder causally related to dopamine receptorblocking drug (DRBD) exposure, is a well-recognized iatrogenic disorder in adults1 and less commonly seen in children and i n f a n t ~ . ~ J Although the literature on TD mainly focuses on patients treated with DRBDs used as antipsychotics, DRBDs are also used to treat a wide array of medical, chiefly gastrointestinal, ~ o n d i t i o n s . ~ . ~ Although most of the drugs that cause TD are DRBDs that antagonize dopamine D, receptors, other classes of drugs have the potential to cause TD, including antidepressants and cab cium channel blockers. The reported lifetime prevalence of TD in patients treated with traditional DRBDs has varied greatly, with an average of about 25% of exposed ad~1ts . l .~ Risk factors associated with the development of TD include advanced age, female gender, and, more important, total cumulative drug We sought to determine which drugs most commonly cause TD in patients referred to our clinic.

Development of acute dystonia in three brothers due to metoclopramide
One of the agents that cause dystonic reactions is metoclopramide. In this study, we presented three individuals of the same family who were admitted to our hospital while receiving the treatment of metoclopramide because of developing acute dystonic reaction. Appropriate doses of metoclopramide therapy had begun to all brothers with a diagnosis of gastroenteritis. After receiving the first dos...
متن کاملSulfhemoglobinemia presenting as pulse oximetry desaturation.
SULFHEMOGLOBIN is a rare cause of cyanosis that is usually drug induced. The effects of sulfhemoglobin on pulse oximetry have not been reported widely. We present the case of a 48-yr-old woman who was scheduled to undergo palliative surgery. Before anesthesia, she had an oxygen saturation, measured by pulse oximetry (SpO2), of 85%. This apparent desaturation subsequently was discovered to be th...
متن کاملAngioneurotic edema: a rare case of hypersensitivity to metoclopramide
The case of a 30-year-old woman who had already experienced two incidents of angioneurotic edema and urticaria caused by drugs during the acute gastroenteritis. The allergological workup revealed hypersensitivity to metoclopramide. This case documents that metoclopramide, a drug commonly used to inhibit the vomiting, may cause not only bronchospastic reaction in an asthmatic patient but also an...
متن کاملReversible nonthrombocytopenic palpable purpura associated with metoclopramide.
OBJECTIVE To report a case of reversible nonthrombocytopenic palpable purpura associated with metoclopramide. CASE SUMMARY A 72-year-old white man was admitted for worsening palpable purpura over a two-day period. Two days prior to admission, metoclopramide 10 mg orally three times per day was started for a gastrointestinal condition. Upon admission, all drugs were continued except metoclopra...
متن کاملThe gastroprokinetic and antiemetic drug metoclopramide is a substrate and inhibitor of cytochrome P450 2D6.
Metoclopramide is increasingly prescribed for conditions previously treated with cisapride, but its metabolic enzymology and drug interactions are poorly understood. Using human liver microsomes (HLMs) and recombinant human cytochromes P450 (P450), we identified the major route of metoclopramide oxidation and the P450 isoforms involved. We also documented the ability of metoclopramide to inhibi...
